If there’s one thing I’ve noticed that consistently brings people together, it’s sports. The latest GREW newsletter, spanning from December 2022 to November 2024, highlights this beautifully with its innovative use of sports to foster community among young people from diverse ethnic backgrounds.
Funded by ERASMUS-SPORT, the GREW project, short for Growth, Resilience, Empowerment, and Wellbeing, uses what they call Education Through Sport (ETS) to make a difference. This isn’t just about playing games; it’s about teaching through them, which is a clever twist that seems to have struck a chord with the participants.
The newsletter is jam-packed with coverage from a variety of European sporting events, including ice skating, football competitions, and many more! Not only are the activities themselves unique, but they’ve also been utilized as launching pads for more in-depth discussions about identity and collaboration, which are critical for promoting intercultural understanding.
We are not stopping here; we’re compiling their learnings into a Standard Format and a Handbook for community leaders and youth workers. This means that the successful strategies developed during the GREW project can be replicated and adapted elsewhere, which is exciting for anyone looking to engage youth and build community.
Reading this newsletter, it’s clear that the GREW project has laid down a promising pathway for others to follow. It’s not just about sports; it’s about building bridges between cultures, and that’s a game worth playing.
